Color Rendering Index Explained

LED CRI Defined

The Color Rendering Index (CRI) is the relative ability of a light source to replicate colors generated by a reference light source of the same color temperature. It is measured as a number between 0 and 100.

LED CRI Explained

This is often used to compare a light source ability to replicate the sun. In this case the sun is the reference light source. In layman's terms a CRI of 80 means that the LED light bulb is replicating 80% of the visible color spectrum that the sun would produce at the same color temperature. A CRI of 100%, taken at a color temperature of noon day sunlight will exactly reproduce the colors found on a sunny day at noon. A CRI of 50% taken at noon day sun will partially reproduce the colors when compared to that of a normal noon day.
If you have ever watched a sunset you will notice how the colors change from a purer white to more yellow and red. This color change is typical of the changes in color temperature from higher numbers to lower numbers. If the reference light source used for CRI is at noon day sun a 100% CRI will result in a whiter light, if the reference source used is at sun set, at 100%CRI wil result in a light with more yellow and red. If you were to measure the light of sunset to a reference of noon day sun, the sunset light would only produce a CRI of 60% or less: less than 60% of the light spectrum of noon day light is present in the light of a sunset, hence the shift to more yellows and reds.

Some marketers use differing color temperatures as a reference to attain 100% CRI, when the actual CRI would be much less than 100% if noon day sun light was used as a reference.
Many products marketed as 'natural sunlight' light sources are far from noon day sun.

"The Color Rendering Index (CRI) (sometimes called Color Rendition Index), is a measure of the ability of a light source to reproduce the colors of various objects being lit by the source. It is a method devised by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE). The best possible rendition of colors is specified by a CRI of one hundred, while the very poorest rendition is specified by a CRI of zero. For a source like a low-pressure sodium vapor lamp, which is monochromatic, the CRI is nearly zero, but for a source like an incandescent light bulb, which emits essentially black body radiation, it is nearly one hundred. The CRI is measured by comparing the color rendering of the test source to that of a "perfect" source which is generally a black body radiator, except for sources with color temperatures above 5000K, in which case a simulated daylight (e.g. D65) is used. For example, a standard "cool white" fluorescent lamp will have a CRI near 63. Newer "triphosphor" fluorescent lamps often claim a CRI of 80 to 90.
CRI is a quantitatively measurable index, not a subjective one. A reference source, such as black body radiation, is defined as having a CRI of 100 (this is why incandescent lamps have that rating, as they are, in effect, almost blackbody radiators), and the test source with the same color temperature is compared against this. Both sources are used to illuminate eight standard samples. The perceived colors under the reference and test illumination (measured in the CIE 1931 color space) are compared using a standard formula, and averaged over the number of samples taken (usually eight) to get the final CRI. Because eight samples are usually used, manufacturers use the prefix "octo-" on their high-CRI lamps."

Naming Conventions for Light Bulb Shapes

Lighting lamps and light bulbs are described by a shape and diameter and length designation. This normally is in the form of letter(s) followed by a number followed by an optional letter. The first letter(s) indicate the shape, the numbers indicate the diameter and the final, optional letter can designate the length.

Light bulb shape examples include: PAR for Parabolic Aluminum Reflector light bulb or T for Tube. Many household halogen light bulbs are a MR16 for Metallic Reflective.

Sizes are referenced by a number that follows the shape. In the US these numbers indicate the maximum diameter in eighths of an inch. In other parts of the world this number will designate the diameter in millimeters. An example of a US bulb is the R20, this is 20/8 or 2.5" in diameter. An example of a metric measure is the A19 which is the typical household incandescent light.

A Shaped Light Bulbs

"A" type bulb shapes are standard house hold light bulbs. The number after the bulb shape is the number of eighths of and inch in diameter. For non-imperial measured bulbs the number following the bulb shape is the number of centimeters at the widest point of the bulb.
Standard bulb sizes include A19 for imperial measurements and A60 for a slightly smaller metric measured bulb.

B and C Shaped Light Bulbs

B shaped bulbs are also know as Candelabra Light Bulbs. The have a bulged base that tapers to a rounded or pointed tip. In some bulbs the tip is bent giving the slight look of a licking flame. C shaped bulbs are similar to holiday lamps.

These bulbs are common in chandeliers, night lights and lower wattage applications such as holiday string lights.
Typical bases for B and C shaped bulbs are E12 in North America.

PAR Light Bulbs: PAR16, PAR20, PAR30 and PAR38

PAR light bulbs utilize a parabolic mirror or reflective surface to focus the light. For LEDs the PAR designation is used to define the shape, as most do not have a reflective lower surface due to the directive nature of LEDs.
Common PAR lamps include the PAR20, PAR30, PAR38 and PAR42, though many other sizes exist. These bulbs come in various beam angles that result in spot and flood lamps.
This shape is very similar to the R shape and in some cases the PAR and R are interchangeable as shapes for LED

LED light bulbs have been around for many years, typically used in home lighting, commercial lighting and so on. The parameters of LED light bulb will help us how to choose the proper types of bulb. Details of several types of bases and light sockets are shown in diagrams with dimensions and names. 

Naming Conventions of Light Bulb Sockets and Base Types

Light bulb bases and sockets are normally defined by a letter-number-letter format, with the last letter optional. The first letter designates the shape or form of the base, the numbers represent either the width of the base or the distance between the pins. The second letter designates the number of pins or contacts on the lamp. The numbers are normally in millimeters. LED light bulb sockets and bases are manufactured to the same standards as halogen, incandescent and other traditional lights.

By way of example a standard USA screw-in incandescent bulb has a base type of E26. E stands for Edison screw-in and the 26 means that the base is 26 millimeters. E27 is the European standard screw-in size. (note: EagleLight part numbers that contain 'E27' sold in North America will fit E26 sockets and in many cases support voltages from 85VAC to 220VAC)

LED light bulbs and LED lamps use the same socket designations as traditional light bulbs. Retrofit Solid State Lights (SSL) that use LEDs or OLEDs are normally designed to be compatible with existing sockets.

E or Edison screw-in sockets and bases

Screw-in bases, also known as Edison bases and light bulb sockets are used through out the world.

The naming conventions include terms like medium base and candelabra base. Often they are referred to with a letter-number designation that starts with an "E" followed by the number of millimeters in diameter of the base. If your base ends in a "d" this indicates a double contact base, this is typically used for 3-way bulbs.

Typically North American 120VAC bases and 240VAC bases differ by only a millimeter and carry the same full name in each country. Many EagleLight bulbs support both 120VAC and 240VAC, check specifications for the bulb to determine if the bulb supports 240VAC if your application requires that.

LED flanged bases include base types like: micro-midget flanged base, midget flanged, miniature midget flanged, sub-midget flanged, and special-midget flanged base types. These LED light bulb types are used in automotive and electronic device lighting applications.

G or Bi-pin light bulb base and sockets

The "G" base type of lamp and light bulb is used to designate a "pinned" base. This can include several pin types and different numbers of pins.

Designation is by letter(s)-numbers-optional letter: The first letters include "G" followed by an optional U, X, Y or Z. Next is a number that designates the number of millimeters between the center of each pin. Finally the optional final letter designates the number of pins, no letter implies 2 pins as does a d for double. Pin number designations include: s : Single, d : Double, t : Triple for 3 pins and q : Quadruple for 4 pins.
Examples include: GU10 base type, G24q base type, or for T8 tubes G13 bi-pin.

K or Cable connected lights and lamps

EagleLight uses the designation of K to indicate that a cable is the power connection for a lamp. This designation is EagleLight product specific. So where you see a K used in a base type location in a part number. You can assume that the product is a wired connection to power.
